Get Wrecked for European History

5. 18th century Europe saw a significant growth in the population of the continent, this was due to several changes that occured during the century. One major change was the dissappearance of the Bubonic or Black Plague, which was a major cause of death since as far back as the fourteenth century. Another change was the drainage of swamps, improved sewage systems, and improved water supply units helped in decreased the number of bugs around. People were able to store food better, reducing the amount of spoiled food and rodents, and built more roads and canals to connect towns. These two actions helped lessen the amounts of starvation by providing a way to transport food to areas hit with famine or crop failure and a way to have said food last longer. There were also new types of food being brought in from the Americas, which gave europeans more crops to plant and rotate, to reduce crop failure. Lastly, there were less wars being fought in this century, and wars that occured were less destructive than wars centuries prior.

6. Families in Europe were able to dedicate for space towards many differnet things during the 17th and 18th centuries. People were able to dedicate more time towards their private life, comfort, and children due to a more 'relaxed' way of life that developed in this time. A rise in literacy lead to a rise in literature for pleasure, towns began offering more amusements for people. Enlightenment ideals spread to children, and influenced how they were cared for. Many books and pamphlets were written that advised people be more caring and loving to their children, and to gve them space to grow rather that treat them as tiny adults. Many people during this time started moving to larger cities, which gave them a larger amount of privacy.
Marriage patterns in this time helped to control Europe's population in two ways. One was that during this time, perople often married in their late twenties, after aquiring a stable career to provide stable support for the family. Late marriages could also be contributed to the laws of the area the couple lived in, as they may have eeded to ask permission for marriage first. This meant that people had less time to get pregnant and give birth.

1. Economic changes occuring in this time lead to an increase of people's spending money. And you know how people are, when they got extra money they gotta spend it cause it kinda shows they got that money to spend. So, people would buy all the frivulous things they wanted and manufacturers saw this and made more things for people to buy!1 How did this lead to new social patterns you ask? Well people spend money on recreation yeah, well the middle class would go to certain things and the richer people or upper class would go other places. An example is cockfighting, no upper class person is gonna be there cause it's so gruesome and for the lowest of classes!1!

3. So, feudualism was really great and successful so it wasn't needed for people to get money, so we got rid of it! It started declining slowly in the West, then eventually disappeared in the 1500s. But it still existed in Eastern Europe and parts of Central Europe until the 1850s. Even though feudualism disappeared, some of the feudual 'customs' were still remaining. Landlords also tried enclosing on common lands, which peasants used to grow their own foods and raise animals, so they could increase their own revenue. They also switched from evenly distributing fertile lands between peasants to just giving plots of land that were surrounding the peasants homes. Why did they do this? They wanted to get as much money as possible! Who cares if most people depended on these lands for hunting for and growing their food?

4. (I accidentally deleted a huge portion of this I'm sorry) There were several reasons for people to move to big cities instead of staying in their dirt-poor towns to starve, especially now. During this time, there was a huge population boom due to a larger variety of vegetables, better sewage systems. Look at section 5 to get a better explaination for why the population grew. Now why would this caause people to go to cities you ask? Because people need jobs and these cities had plenty of them sonny! They had tons of mills and factories and construction jobs as these cities were always growing. Everyone could get a job, even your freeloading kids!
But this all sounds great yeah, but all these people being concentrated into such a small place had its downsides. A major problem was sanitation. In the country, your sewage could just be dumped wherever, theres not enough where it'll matter. In cities they needed sewage systems, but theywere 'open' so it did't really do much. There was not only human waste, but horse waste from all the carriages! This lead to a distinct odour of London when paired with the smog from factories. These living conditions probably killed tonnes of people cause it's super unhealthy and leads to widespread diseases.
But remember how most people coming in here were from the country? Moving tothe big cities doesn't just make you rich. This meant a large portion of these cities had large amounts of homeless people!

Dear Europe, this is not an adult so don't treat it as such.

Here's a political cartoon, titled "A Court for King Cholera". Someone drew this because they were upset with the filth spread about London and how it had lead to an outbreak of Cholera.

2. OKAY so, this whole price revolution was pretty much caused by all the European countries that decided to waltz over to the Americas during the Age of Exploration (15-18th century) to take our gold and silver then bring it back to Europe! This caused a boost in market economy because all this gold and silver gave countries more money but it like, drove up the price of things. This also involves the enclosure movement which was basically, the mid point between us all farming our own food then a market economy being established where we buy all our stuff. This pretty much happened cause of population growth and inflation caused by the gold and silver being brought to Europe. Why was there a movement? Because people just wanted to grow their own stuff instead of having to spend money to buy it, so much more complicated! But, as always, the government knows whats best for us! Now there were tonnes of relovts and riots and stuff, cause population grew as the government wouldn't let people use their farmland because M A R K E T E C O N O M Y. But eventually it was figured out, the government fenced off good areas of land and gave 'compensation' to the people(but it was often really gross, infertile land). Few people got to own land, but those that did owned a whole lot so good for them yeah.
Pretty much, land owners had fences around their land so no one else could get in to try and farm or something. The government made this big huge fuss cause of inflation, so they switched from everyone farming their own stuff to market economy.
