Get Wrecked for European History

Metternich used conservatism to suppress a heck ton of stuff, especially cause he hated them darn liberals. When they came a knocking, asking for better treatment and affordable food he told them "sorry dude but this is how it's always been so? not my fault". Really though, he didn't want liberalism and nationalism to get important cause that could be bad news for Austria. And that bad news would mean the dissolving of an empire! So that aint happedning (for now at least). Metternich thought that if something had been happening for a long time then, it was fundamental. So uh he went and made the Carlsbad Decrees so that them liberal/national heckers wouldn't be able to do much. The Carlsbadd Decrees pretty much went and put heavy censorship, policing, and espionage and made that A-OK.

The July Revolutions in France occured in 1830, and were due to Charles X taking the throne from Louis XVIII. Charles opposed tons of things like liberalism, republicanism, and constitutionalism. He destroyed freedom of press, dissolved the Chamber of Deputies, changed laws so 3/4 of electorates lost their vote, and a heck ton of other rude stuff. Obviously the French people were pretty darn upset about this so they decided, lets have another revolution!! So there was like, 3 days of riots and strikes that the royal forces couldn't control so Charles fleed from France to England. After that whole mess, Louis-Phillipe was given the crown as "King of the French" and he helped undo all Charles stupid changes.

Ok so first of all, the Concert of Europe was this group of countries that had an alliance to try and keep Europe from having a bunch of wars that formed shortly after Napoleon was taken out of power. They tried to stop revolutions and wars by being super conservative which was, all around, a bad idea. Now, a heck ton of stress wsa going on in the 1840s; bad harvests, uneven industrial evelopment, less jobs, it was just a bad time. And with a ton of crusty white dudes pushing their conservative ways onto the people, of course wide-spread revolutions would happen! And of course, this all started with those cheese eating surrender monkeys (the french). Now remember how they kicked out Charles X and replaced him with Louis Phillipe? Turns out THEY DONT WANT HIM TO RULE. Can't they just make up their minds?? Seriously. Anyway, cause the French heckers decided to have themselves seconds on that revolution buffet, the rest of Europe was like "gosh heck darn let's have usselves somuv that!". So the rest of Europe started having little uprisings all over the place, and England was like "Imma bounce" and just left the Concert of Europe cause they weren't having none of that. But yeah, all these uprisings were having and they were like "Give us some rights! We're all starving and you're hoarding food!" so they were doing their best to kick the current leaders out to make their own 'better' government. And when these liberals gained places of power, the Concert of Europe dissolved as it wasn't really able to continue.

MMkay so most of Europe is still pretty bitter over what Napoleon did with that whole "I want everything, give me ur land", so this thing called the Concert of Europe was established. What countries were rocking out in this concert and why? Well it was Austria, Russia, Prussia, and England and they were all banded together (get it??? band/concert haha) to try and keep Europe's power balanced. Trust me, they did NOT want anotherr Napoleon like dude to come along. So they stuck together and tried to make sure that all countries in Europe were equally powerful, so that no one could take over anyone else. Now they were pretty conservative, they went to all thos countries without monarchs and slapped one right in there. A popular example being France who had Charles X launched into their face from the Bourbon monarchy. They also did there best to make sure no one thought about having some sort of revolution (spoiler alert: it didn't work). They did this by taking away freedom of the press and heavily censoring anything they could get their dirty little hands onto.
